13 Election Day Texting Tips to Keep Your Messages Delivering in 2026

4 min read

Two weeks out, your scripts are approved, your volunteers are trained, and every client wants their GOTV messages sent out on the same morning. Carrier traffic is about to hit its peak for the cycle. The programs that deliver on time are the ones that finished their setup early.

Here are 13 tips our team shares with campaigns, consultants, and advocacy groups heading into Election Day on November 3. They're grouped by what to lock in now, how to keep your data clean, when to send, and how to run the final stretch.

‍

Lock In Your Setup Now

1. Finish registrations this week. 10DLC brand and campaign registrations, Campaign Verify tokens, and new numbers all take time to clear. Vetting queues get longer as Election Day gets closer, so register new committees and use cases now, not the week before.

2. Get ready for iOS 27. In iOS 27, iPhone users with certain message settings only see images and video from a known sender. From an unknown number, a video shows up as a file chip instead of playing inline. Send a vCard early, ask supporters to save it, and keep video sends on that same number.

3. Test MMS on real phones. Send test messages to real devices on each major carrier before launch. Keep file sizes small. What looks great in a preview can arrive slow, cropped, or filtered.

‍

Keep Your Data Clean

4. Prep lists a day or two early. Upload and scrub your lists ahead of time, then schedule your sends or set them up paused. Election week is the worst time to discover a formatting issue in a file.

5. Sync suppression lists across every vendor. If a voter opted out with one vendor, they shouldn't hear from you through another. Sync suppression lists before each send and clear out landlines, disconnected numbers, and duplicates. Every bad number costs money and adds to your error rates.

6. End every message with an opt-out line. "Reply STOP to opt out" belongs on every outgoing message, SMS and MMS. Skip it and carriers may filter your traffic more aggressively right when you can least afford it.

‍

Time Your Sends Right

7. Start at an offset time. Everyone schedules for 9:00 AM. Start yours at 9:16 instead. Avoiding the top and bottom of the hour keeps your send out of the biggest traffic spikes.

8. Send GOTV early in the day, by time zone. Messages can queue upstream after they leave your platform. A send that finishes at 7:45 PM may not land before quiet hours. Schedule time-sensitive GOTV sends early and segment by the recipient's time zone, not your headquarters' clock.

9. Expect MMS delays. Plan for 15 to 30 minutes of MMS delivery lag as traffic backs up upstream, especially on Election Day. Build that buffer into any message tied to a deadline.

10. Have an SMS backup ready. If your MMS is delayed or filtered, a plain SMS version gets the message out. Write it now so it's ready to go.

‍

Run the Final Stretch

11. Turn on status and rejection alerts. Set notifications for send status changes and set up how carrier rejections get handled. You want to know about a problem in minutes, not after the polls close.

12. Confirm P2P texts early. If your team confirms messages before they go out, get those confirmations done as far ahead as you can. Don't let approvals be the bottleneck on Election Day morning.

13. Staff the inbox for reply spikes. Replies surge after GOTV sends. Schedule volunteers in shifts, load your reply library with answers on polling places, voter ID, and ballot return, and set an escalation path for questions your team can't answer.
